2019 St. Mary's City, MD

Date

2019

Location

St. Mary's City, MD

Our 2019 meeting was on Oct 15-18, 2019. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Solomos, Maryland. President Frank Mayfield created a detailed itinerary for us to visit many interesting sites. Including the first Catholic Church in Maryland. So, after a short video in the visitor's center, we headed out in a light rain to see the church. After we learned about the church, we visited an open-air building with lots of display boards that explained many interesting facts about life back in the 1600's. We then had lunch at the Inn at Brome Howard. We toured the historic buildings at that site. Back in St Mary's City, we toured the reconstructed 1676 State House of Maryland. Then at the College of Maryland, where they found an old cellar and now have cleared out much of it to show its construction and the items they found in the area. It was built in 1638.

After our business meeting, and lunch, many of us stopped at St. Ignatius Catholic Church at Chapel Point, MD. It was started in 1662 and is the oldest continuously active parish in the US. BL Higdon had a stained-glass window put up in his memory along with a large headstone in the cemetery out in front of the church.
